At the 7th edition of the Middle East Lighting Design Summit 2018 held on the 2nd & 3rd May 2018 in Dubai, discussions focussed on the latest advancements in lighting technology that have been responsible for the rapid transformation of the lighting industry. In the various panel discussions and presentations throughout the two day event, participants consisting of lighting experts, designers, architects, and urban planners from across the GCC region, discussed the current trends, technologies and practices shaping the lighting design industry. MELA’s director Gerald Strickland participated in a panel discussion about the importance of standards and regulations in ensuring a ‘level playing field’ in the market. He referred to ‘new industry direction on regulation which looks at minimising the number of poorly enforced rules and regulations to a more effective reality based on fewer, better enforced regulations in the market.’ To this end MELA restated its aim to actively assist and support regulators in the region to formulate ‘value added’ regulations for lighting where needed.
