At the MELA Board meeting that took place in Dubai on the 17th October 2017 and subsequently on the 13th December 2017, John Carruthers Managing Director Fagerhult Lighting Group MENA was elected President of MELA by the members for the period 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2020.
The following activities for MELA have been agreed for 2018 in support of lighting policy related developments in the region:
- PRIORITY 1 – Strategic initiative to run parallel to the activities defined below to determine a 3 to 5-year action plan for MELA.
- PRIORITY 2 – Continue to support the development of regulations in the MELA focus countries – this is a core activity for MELA as Governments require policy expertise as technological developments in the lighting sector require standards to keep pace with these developments.
- PRIORITY 3 – Keep the MELA focus on Market Surveillance and Compliance activities – with a particular focus on product safety.
- PRIORITY 4 – Build a strong relationship with the newly formed Lighting Institute – to ensure that MELA and Lighting Institute become recognised for their expertise as educators and supporters of regulatory affairs and other lighting related areas.
‘MELA has had an extremely active three years with tangible milestones achieved across the region particularly in UAE and Saudi Arabia where the development of lighting regulations has been most prominent. Regulators in these countries have on many occasions relied on policy expertise brought by our in company experts for all aspects of lighting. I look forward very much to steering MELA through the next phase of its activities to continue to add value in this area by offering support and expertise to the many Governments in the region as they grapple with the complexities of lighting products and systems in the next phase of their digital development.’
